With the weather beginning to improve it is now a time many people will consider having the exterior of their homes re-decorated.
It has been a harsh winter so any signs of flaking paint or bare wood really need to get attention quickly to avoid expensive repairs.
The wood will need a couple of weeks of warm weather to help dry out the moisture within the wood,re-decorating exterior woodwork too soon after a harsh winter will simply
trap the moisture within the wood which over time will cause blistering and peeling, especially on south facing fascia.
A quality paint such as dulux weathershield should be used to get the most from your paint system, although opaque stains such as butinox offer a great long lasting system within a more satin like finish compared to traditional gloss.
Minor exterior wood damage can be fixed by using a proprietory wood filler after removing all the rotten wood, this is far preferrable to putty for repairs.
The wood filler will dry and be overcoatable with paint very quickly whereas putty may need weeks to dry properly so by painting prematurely the putty will, eventually, dry, but the coating will crack due to the movement of the putty drying (shrinking).
Decorators in Aberdeen will be used to such minor repairs given our traditionally wet weather, but it is an important point to consider to ensure a longer lasting paint system.
